Skills Clubs

Skills Academy

Skills Clubs are a fun, exciting, after-school initiative to give a vocational taster programme to students as a preparation for Increased Flexibility Programmes (IFP), Diplomas and Young Apprenticeships.

Skills Clubs aim to address post-16 under-participation and attainment by:

  • increasing the number of children and young people on the path to success
  • closing the gap in educational achievement between disadvantaged children and their peers by enhancing employability skills
  • continuing to raise standards
  • offering vocational awareness through workshops.

What do we do?

Clubs typically run over a couple of evenings a week, and include pupils from different schools - giving the added advantage of bringing pupils from different areas together. Each session often revolves around different occupational areas of the 14-19 Diploma, with fun, interactive workshops for the pupils to get involved in.

How can it benefit me?

Students
Specialists from specific occupational areas often come in to talk about what they do and answer questions, so students get an insight into what’s involved in different job roles.

One of the first pupils who took part in the very first Skills Club said that it helped to boost her confidence and self esteem. She said “I know when I walk into a classroom I feel like part of the group and I’m no longer just watching from the sidelines.”

Employers

Through the Skills Club programme, employers have the opportunity to promote themselves as employers of choice, and give their own staff the opportunity to building their Personal Development Portfolios (PDP).
