Cadets

What is a Cadet Programme?

Our Cadet training programmes have been set up to help young people start a career in the NHS, whilst continuing to study an academic or vocational qualification.

We have excellent placement opportunities in a variety of different areas giving Cadets the chance, first hand, to find out what it’s like to work in the NHS. Cadets can then either pursue a career in the NHS or go on to higher education.

Who can become a Cadet?

For most of the Cadet Programmes you’ll need to be between 16 -18 years old and have 2 GCSEs at Grade C or above and have already completed statutory education. (Some Programmes have no age limit – check the course information for details).

If you have a genuine desire to work for the NHS or wider health care sector and are prepared to work hard in college and on work placements, then you could become one of our Cadets.

How will it benefit me?

Cadets

You will join an excellent training programme where you’ll get to work alongside NHS professionals in real situations.

The programme will give you the appropriate skills, training and qualifications to enable you to  progress onto further or higher education programmes or apply for employment in the NHS or wider health sector.

Employers

You will attract motivated, bright young people into your sector and offer them an insight into rewarding and challenging career options. You’ll have the opportunity to support these young people to develop essential work skills and reach their full potential.

Education Providers

You will be able to build closer alliances with local employers and gain first hand knowledge of their recruitment requirements. You’ll be able to attract students who have a strong desire to learn and work in their chosen subject area.

How do the Programmes work?

You’ll first have a period of induction where we’ll get to know each other. During this time you’ll spend most of your time in college and there will be some Academy days when you’ll be able to meet staff from the NHS and begin to understand the different roles they have and what will be expected of you when you begin your work placements.

If you have good attendance, are punctual and hand your work in on time you could go onto the Cadetship. At this point you’ll begin work placements whilst continuing your studies within the college setting.

Every week you’ll spend part of your time in college and part of your time on placement.

In college there is a team of tutors and staff who’ll support and guide you, and there is also a dedicated Academy Team who will organise your placements and visit you to offer support.
